World of Naaya - Teacher's Guide - Environment 1: The Woodlands

Lesson 3: Exploring the Woodlands: Time Tokens, Fact Files, Portraits and Nature Frames

Purpose: To learn about all of the knowledge objects that are found in the Woodlands and how to collect them.
Objectives: Students will learn about each type of knowledge object they can collect as they explore the Woodlands. They will learn that each object has an additional story narrative to provide help provide a personal point of view to the facts.
Materials: Computers (including one for teacher), SmartBoard or projector.

Whole Class Lesson (15-20 minutes):

  1. Project computer desktop onto a SmartBoard or projector screen.
  2. Log in to the World of Naaya.
  3. Tell students that, in addition to coins and fun “baubles” that can be found in the world, many areas have special learning objects to collect.
  4. Demonstrate guiding an Avatar to the Cabin area. Collect a Time Token. (If you walk up to the left there is the “First Thanksgiving” Token.

  5. Show the students how teach Time Token has an illustrated image. Show them how you can click on the picture, and it will flip to show a photograph that show an aspect of it in the real world. (In this case, the photograph shows a real-world painting of the First Thanksgiving.)
  6. Show how each Time Token presents four facts. Mention that, later, quizzes may ask about some of these facts.
  7. Select the “Story” button and demonstrate how a character will talk about the Time Token and give a little of his/her personal experience
  8. Close the Time Token by clicking on the red X button. Then open the Scrapbook and show how the Time Token is now stored there.
  9. Ask students to try to find one of each type of knowledge item: A Fact File, a Time Token, a Nature Frame, and a Portrait.
  10. Encourage students to check their scrapbooks and keep track of how many things they are collecting and how many empty spaces are left.

Independent/Guided Practice (10-15 minutes):

While students navigate the game, circulate to ask students questions about some of the Time Tokens or other items they have collected. Encourage them to read many of the facts and study the images (and not just run around the world collecting things without looking carefully at them.)

Lesson Summary:

Have students log out of the game and join you for a class discussion. Ask students to name some of the Fact Files, Nature Frames and other objects they’ve found. Can they share any of the information that came with the objects?

Extension Activity:

Ask students to write down two or three of the knowledge items they have collected today.  Then ask them to think about how they are connected to each other.  Have them come up with some words that describe all three of the items.
