World of Naaya - Teacher's Guide - Environment 1: The Woodlands

Lesson 7: Creativity

Purpose: To encourage creativity in the World of Naaya.
Objectives: Students will learn how to write, draw and create pictures in the game.
Materials: Computers (including one for teacher), SmartBoard or projector.

Whole Class Lesson (15-20 minutes):

  1. Project computer desktop onto a SmartBoard or projector screen.
  2. Log in to the World of Naaya.
  3. Ask students how explorers might keep track of what they see and experience in a new place (possible responses: keep a journal, take pictures, send letters to a friend, draw sketches of interesting plants, etc.)
  4. Explain to students that during this session they will learn how to write, draw, and add pictures to their journals, just as an explorer might.
  5. Review how to access the journals within the Scrapbook and how to type a journal entry.
  6. Show students how to use the drawing feature in the journal. Ask them how they might use these features while playing the game (possible responses: drawing my own map of the world, etc.)
  7. Show them how to mark their journal entries as public or private depending on who can see their work.
  8. Mention that they can earn a Creativity badge based on what they create in their journals.
  9. Challenge them to use their journals creatively while playing the game during today’s session.

Independent/Guided Practice (10-15 minutes):

While students navigate the game, circulate to answer any questions about the components of the journal and to prompt additional ideas about how it can be used creatively.

Lesson Summary:

Have students log out of the game and join you for a class discussion. Ask students how they used the journal during today’s session. Continue to brainstorm ways it can be used in future sessions.

Extension Activity:

Ask the students to draw a picture in their Journals illustrating the World of Naaya through their eyes. What do the Woodlands look like? Or consider asking them to draw a picture of a specific landmark, their favorite possibly.
