Purpose: |
To encourage kindness and responsibility in the World of Naaya. |
Objectives: |
Students will learn how to take care of the environment, their pets, themselves and their friends in the Woodlands. |
Materials: |
Computers (including one for teacher), SmartBoard or projector. |
Whole Class Lesson (15-20 minutes):
- Project computer desktop onto a SmartBoard or projector screen.
- Log in to the World of Naaya.
- Ask students what it means to have a good character. What are some of the qualities of a person with a good character (possible responses: friendly, caring, helpful, hard-working, etc.)
- Explain to students that during this session they will demonstrate character by caring for the environment, their pets, and their friends while they play the game.
- Solicit ideas about how we take care of ourselves and one another in the real world. Talk about ways to protect our environment.
- Explain that the environment in the World of Naaya must maintain its natural balance. Students can help if they avoid overfishing in the River or collecting too much wood from the Wood Pile.
- Point out the icon that appears when a pet is hungry. Mention that pets will run away if they are not fed. Ask students how they might obtain food for their pets (possible responses: collect coins, buy food from the General Store, and feed pet at homestead).
- Ask how they can show kindness towards other players (possible responses: sending friendly messages, sending gifts, working together to build a staircase, etc). Explain that some messages may get rated “Don’t Like” by peers if they are unfriendly or inappropriate.
- Ask students how they can take care of themselves in the environment (possible responses: collect coins, buy food, eat when energy level is low, sleep in homestead, rest by sitting in homestead, etc.)
- Encourage students to think about ways they can show kindness and responsibility while they play the game during today’s session.
Independent/Guided Practice (10-15 minutes):
While students navigate the game, circulate to ask how students are showing kindness and responsibility as they play. Answer any questions about feeding pets and sending messages.
Have students log out of the game and join you for a class discussion. Ask students to share ways they demonstrated kindness and responsibility during today’s session. How did these acts positively impact the environment, pets, friends, students’ own avatars?
Ask students to send kind messages congratulating one another on their their achievements, such as badges they’ve earned and completing quizzes.
